La Cosas En La Republica Dominicana

Altos de Chavon is quite a unique attraction in the Dominincan Republic. Built on a beautiful plateau overlooking the Chavon River, Altos de Chavon is a jewel of art, architecture and culture. Located entirely within Casa de Campo, Altos de Chavon was constructed in 1976 as envisioned by Italian designer, Roberto Capo, to showcase and house a variety of artists & performers. The village fosters professional training and artistic expression through its artists-in-residence program with craft ateliers.

Designed to resemble a 16th century Mediterranean village, Dominican stonecutters, carpenters and iron-smiths combined their skills to fashion stone and coral into interesting shops & buildings, winding cobblestone paths and the magnificent, 5,000-seat ampitheater. You will enjoy visiting artisan's studios, galleries, shops, and restaurants here.

If you, like me, find great enjoyment in bringing home a souvenir which truly comes from the country you are visiting, the village of Altos de Chavon will certainly make your shopping easier. Artisans at the village produce handcrafts such as woven-fiber products (brightly colored tapestries), ceramics and silk-screened items (meaning t-shirts mostly), including posters and note cards. It was a shame I did not bring back even 1 postcard from this place considering how picturesque it is!!
